A print from the famous "Routlege's Coloured Scrap-Book" published in
1867
in New York and London. Routlege's books were classic children picture books. Pages were single-sided and made of HEAVY linen cloth. The original source of this page is a scare children's book with stunning chromolithographs. The previously under-appreciated art of early children's book is just now being corrected. However, because they were for children, most have not survived in good shape, with may a pen or crayon scribble.
NOTE: Condition is quite good due to heavy linen cloth. However, at more than 150 years old, these civil-war era prints due have some wear and tear and minor soiling. Please inspect picture for faults.

The Nature of Prints & Engravings
: It was not until the 20th century that prints were commonly produced for the
itself. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as
illustrations
to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques:
relief printing
(woodcut & wood engraving),
intaglio printing
(steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and
planographic printing
(lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
